Dead ends multiply near the goal

Early layouts keep dead ends far from the exit. Later ones cluster them right around it, so the final stretch is where most time actually gets lost.

Line-of-sight gets deliberately blocked

Walls and props placed to block a wide view force actual exploration instead of just eyeballing a path from a corner.

Timed or limited-view modes remove backtracking as an option

Without unlimited time to retrace steps, a wrong turn costs real progress instead of just a few extra seconds.

Vertical layers add a dimension most players forget

A maze that stacks levels vertically means the fastest path isn't always the one that looks shortest on a single floor - sometimes doubling back to reach a different floor entirely is the real shortcut.
